Psychology Internship Program

An Invitation…

The Ohio Psychology Internship is a consortium of agencies committed to the quality training of psychology interns.  Previously known as Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine (NEOUCOM) Psychology Internship, the internship formally changed its name to Ohio Psychology Internship on July 1, 2006 when the affiliation with the medical school ended.  Summit Psychological Associates, Inc. administers the internship as it has for more than ten years.  The internship is based in three community agencies and one psychiatric hospital, which offer a wide range of mental health training opportunities.  Psychological interns also participate in a variety of conferences and seminars.

The Ohio Psychology Internship is accredited by the American Psychological Association (750 First Street N.W., Washington D.C., (202) 336-5500; www.apa.org).  The next accreditation site visit will be held in 2013.

About The Area…

The Ohio Psychology Internship Program is located near the cities of Akron, Canton and Youngstown in Northeastern Ohio.  Each of the cities (population 220,000 – 250,000) boasts its own symphony orchestra, theater, ballet company, art museums and attractions.  Each has excellent concert halls and theaters which host national performances and the areas boast several National Parks.  Canton houses the Football Hall of Fame and the Hall of Fame Game in August each year and Akron is the home of the Inventors Hall of Fame.  Additionally, the internship is close to Cleveland and its many diverse communities as well as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Science Center, Jacob’s Field (home of the Cleveland Indians), and world class orchestra.

The Cities are connected by interstate highways providing ready access to large parks, recreational lakes and national forests that offer an exciting array of water sports, skiing, hiking, golf and other outdoor activities.  Rural life is only 10 minutes away from each hospital or agency.  You may choose to live inside one of the cities, in the suburbs, or in a nearby town or village.  Each city boasts housing costs below the national average in a safe environment for you and your family.

The following pages provide a brief overview of the Ohio Psychology Internship Program, as well as the hospitals and agencies that serve as internship placement sites.  The similarities of these sites, as well as their unique characteristics, are highlighted to convey the wide breadth of training experiences available.  We invite you to closely examine our program to learn how it can match your personal and professional needs to an internship experience.
